\nBut if multiplication and division become part of the big idea and we find a a way to show the relevence of multiplication and division to the world, we may have something. For example national debt, or population, or division of resources. Like if we know how many people in Japan right now need help, and we know how much money has been raised can we figure out how much should be allotted to each person. Or could we figure out how much more would need to be raised? Just running with it..I looked at the first standard I think under 5 th grade. Could we tie the two together? Even if it isn't something relevant for now (for instance, the SS curriculum already covered), it could be a tie in. I was thinking how this does go beyond the scope of third grade, but it would allow for us to illustrate to the students how multiplication and division are related. Projects could be finding the number of people per mile in Japan and the same for the US. What is the land mass area of Japan? How many Japan's could fit into the US? What would the population of the US be if the number of people that lived in that same area lived in the same amounts of area here? These are probably all beyond the 3rd grade level, but it would be a good activity for use with calculators.","dateCreated":"1301309346","smartDate":"Mar 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"kathy.fluharty","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kathy.fluharty","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1301263887\/kathy.fluharty-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"36654538","body":"I can do this too, and gear it up for 5th and 6th. \nWe don't have to focus on division. Maybe the resources idea that was mentioned in an email might be a good starting point. It could be local or global. Local is more third grade but it could be tweaked for any grade. Some topics could be culture, electronics, power (nuclear, solar, wind, coal,...), food supply, raw materials, and so on.
